Consider the ear. A great deal of attention is paid to the hearing function of the ear as one of the five (some may say, six) senses. But, there are other secrets that the ear holds that lead to stress reduction and the pursuit of happiness. Read on.

The Outer Ear

The Outer Ear, made up of the pinna (the visible part of the ear) and the ear canal, funnels sound to the eardrum. Acting as resonators, certain pitches and frequencies are amplified, when both are intact and working properly.

Ear Reflexology

Ear reflexology (auriculotherapy) is extremely powerful because the skin on the ears is covered with very sensitive nerve endings, within the tissue of the ear lobes (lobuli auriculae), in particular.

The external ear is made of cartilage and is funded by the blood supply flowing from the ample blood supply found in the ear lobes, which can be moved for the benefit of the whole body, just by manipulating these fleshy, dangling lobuli with massage.

Chinese medicine recognizes that the ears, like the intestines, the feet and the hands, are mini-maps of the whole body system, supplied by both cranial and spinal nerves.

Acupressure does a phenomenal job in treating various conditions (stress, headaches, etc.) without the worries of a drug dependence or contraindications.

Take a moment to try this simple technique:

Clasp the outer edges of the ear between the forefinger and thumb and rub back and forth, from the top to the bottom.

This increases blood flow to the ear and creates a feeling of blood to the head and making you feel more attentive and focused, while simultaneously reducing stress.

Ear Pulling

Believe it or not, pulling your ear can be a very relaxing experience. Not to be confused with with it is used as a disciplinary action performed by an agitated parent.

Starting with the top of the ear cartilage (or the bottom—your choice), gently grab the ear from all the way behind the ear where it is attached to the head and pull it away, sliding the fingers along the cartilage until you reach the end of the ear.

Then, repeat, giving each ear equal time of tender, loving care.

It’s a sensitive area, so be careful and very gentle.

As with anything else, there are varying techniques for massaging the ear.

You can use a pinching or pressing motion, a circular motion, a pulling motion, or a stroking motion.

You may have experienced a few of these standard approaches to massage on your ear or other parts of your body.

There are endless resources for learning more about self-care in varying modalities.

To be specific, this video about reflexology was produced by the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine, a natural health care center offering alternative medicine to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The center's staff includes Doctors of Natural Health, Doctor of Naturopathy, Doctors of Integrative Homeopathy, Reiki practitioners, Lympathic Drainage practitioners, Alternative Medicine Nurses, certified and licensed practitioners, and natural health care.

Reflexology is a healing modality that is non-invasive and satisfying to the spirit. But, first, you must listen for the call to a healthier, more holistic life experience.
